Ladies and gentlemen, it is officially summer! With temperatures rising - and our energy bills increasing - here are some tips to keeping cool this summer (and preventing heat-related illnesses) without having to run the AC all day:
-Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy. Wearing a hat or using an umbrella is also recommended.
-Carry water or juice with you and drink continuously, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.
-Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid high-protein foods, which increase metabolic heat.
-Slow down and avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m.
-Stay indoors when possible.
-During heat waves, check in on elderly residents in your neighborhood and those who don't have air conditioning.
We hope these tips help you stay cool and healthy this summer!
